Congratulations, Ruth Uselton!

Once a month, our community votes to recognize a single member who embodies the spirit of CrossFit Center City. He/she is someone who has a good attitude, even on the toughest days, is always there to lend support to fellow athletes, and generally goes the extra mile to help build our community to become even more awesome. When it’s time to vote, we send a reminder email out to the entire crew, but if you ever see another member do something really cool for you or the gym in general, feel free to shoot us an email at info@crossfitcc.com or leave a note in the box to tell us what happened!

Here’s what you all had to say about Ruth:

Gahhhhh!!! Ruth has been killing it!! So Ruth and I first met during her first 6month stint with CFCC and we both came back for our second dose around the same time. I couldn’t have been more excited to see her face back in the gym, and at the 5:30 no less! Ruth is extremely encouraging and supportive of her fellow athletes and always lending a helping hand. The more you start to attend the 5:30 you start to miss when certain people aren’t around, Ruth is one of those people–the days are a littler slower when she isn’t around. Keep slaying woman!!

This is kind of weird, but actually remember the first time I spoke to Ruth. It was during the pull up project and I went into the Foundations room for a little “privacy” (so I could use all of the bands back there). Anyway, when I walked into the room I saw Ruth completing her pull up assignment. She was immediately helpful. She got bands for me, worked the camera for my pull up recording, provided encouragement and gave me congratulatory high fives. All this after I barely said hello to her because I was thinking about the pull up workout.

Since then I have spent time with Ruth in and out of the gym. In the gym Ruth is so skilled, strong and generally good at anything that Perrin throws at us. She’s pretty amazing. She does really well and yet I have never seen her with sweat pouring off of her or with a bright red face or messy hair. She always looks so composed that I sometimes wonder if she actually did the workout that I just did. Then I look at the board and I see that, not only did she do the workout, but she also did it faster and with more weight than most of us.

Yes, Ruth is a very competent athlete, but her unquantifiable attributes are what make her a great asset to our community. Despite her occasional hanger, Ruth is fun, smart, easy going, supportive, positive and, most importantly, has a great sense of humor. I enjoy being around her I notice when she is not at a WOD.

I am so happy that Ruth has been chosen Member of the Month! Congratulations, Ruth! I can’t wait to celebrate this honor with you!!

OMG!!! YAY Ruth!!! So happy for you and this is well deserved. I met Ruth several months ago when we partnered up during a rowing WOD and if recall after the workout I was amazed by her rowing skills. We also grew closer during the open. I remember her wanting to barf during 16.1, but she kept pushing through it and got a pretty impressive score. Since then Ruth has continued to shine. She put’s in so much hard work into getting better and it makes me jump up for joy seeing her RX workouts these past couple of weeks. Just recently she crushed Jackie in under 12 mins! Cuckoo Bananas!!! Congrats again Ruth!!! Many ass slaps to you and your achievement!!!

Ruth gives 100% in everything that she does.  She constantly challenges herself and betters herself whether that’s in the basement of CFCC, being a badass attorney, dog mom, or gf.  I am so happy that Ruth decided to go back to CFCC.  She truly loves coming in every day (sometimes twice a day, what???).  She keeps a daily log to track her progress and is truly energized every time she PRs;  Which seems to be daily at this point.  Ruth loved CFCC so much that I decided to join to see what the fuss was about.  Thanks babycakes – I’m drinking CFCC cool aid too!

Ruth is an amazing teammate in life and in the gym.  She’s constantly encouraging others and has a positive outlook on life.  Ruth always looks for the good in people – which is easy to do at CFCC being surrounded by such quality teammates and coaches. I’m proud of you BR.  Keep up the hustle! (Insert kiss emoji)

Ruth is one of the nicest, coolest, most badass chicks here at CFCC. She’s crazy strong and good at CrossFit, and has made HUGE gains in the short amount of time since she’s been back. Ruth is so supportive of others and can always be counted on to stay on and cheer until the last person is finished. She is rad and really deserves Member of the Month. Congrats, Ruth!

Ruth ABSOLUTELY deserves this!

Here’s how I know: I know a few members (depending on the day honestly) are not always huge fans of my picking partners for partner workouts. I totally understand the feeling of wanting to go through 18 minutes (OR MORE) of Hell with someone who totally “gets” your workout flow. That said, I think there is a lot to be gained from having to work with someone new. You are learning to adapt to a new stimulus (a new human!). You are doing that absolutely critical thing to do in order to be a decent person: making a friend! AND you are putting your priorities in a different order than you may be used to: putting a little more emphasis on the needs of of others than yourself (YOU are important too, but that’s a story for another day). At the end of the day, I think working with different people ALWAYS makes us better at life, and at fitness – if we let it.

Ruth deserves this for LOTS of reasons (she moves well, is incredibly coachable and resilient, values doing things right and not the “easy” way, and is capable of handling the Force of Nature known as Jacqui). The reason she really deserves this though, is that she is the type of person who I KNOW without a shadow of doubt I can always pair up with someone new. That literally means I perceive that she is the best of CFCC – someone who I know represents teamwork, integrity, and that most important of values: fun.

Congrats, Ruth! You’re a gem.

Ruth! Tell us about yourself!

1. What do you do when you’re not at the gym? Your profession?

I am one of the many, many, many lawyers at CFCC. I’ve been a general litigator in private practice for about 8 years but 2 months ago I left law firm life. I’m now an in-house attorney at CIGNA which is amazing for 2 reasons: (1) I work with our very own Jen Oliver and (2) I am 3 blocks from CFCC.

2. How did you find out about CF?

One of my best friends in college was in Army ROTC. After we graduated (2002) and he went off to the Army he came back and would want to do these crazy workouts with me. That was the first I had ever heard of CrossFit. I loved it but didn’t realize it was sweeping the nation so I didn’t really get my start until many years later.

3. What makes you come in and train on days that you don’t want to?

So far this hasn’t happened. CFCC is one of the best parts of my day. I look forward to it and can’t wait for 5:30pm to roll around so I can get to work, work, work! But I can say that it’s the progress I see every day in myself and everyone around me that keeps me coming back and motivates me to want to come to the gym every day.

4. What’s your favorite movement and/or metcon?

Favorite metcon and moment was doing Murph Memorial Day weekend back in 2013. So hard but so good and so much camaraderie in the gym that day. It felt amazing to accomplish all those movements that seem insurmountable at the beginning of the workout.

5. What’s one thing you would like to accomplish within CF in the next year?

Kipping hand stand push-ups!!! See you at gymnastics.

6. Name something about you that’s a little-known fact.

Ever since 30 Rock started, people have been telling me I look like Tina Fey. But what most people don’t know is that I bumped into Tracy Morgan once when I was living in NYC and HE even thought I look like her. Tracy Morgan! He actually took a picture with me on HIS phone to show Tina. That felt pretty good. If only he had followed through on his promise to get me on set to meet her…but alas, he never did.
