Athlete Profiles: Shana McCarron

1. When you’re not in “Superman” mode, what’s your Clark Kent job?

I am the director of the South Philadelphia EARN Center, a program that assists TANF recipients move from receiving government benefits into the world of work and self reliance.

2. How did you find out about CrossFit and why did you decide to do it?

I was a member of 12th street gym and saw a poster for a new program that used words like “elite” and “intense.” I guess I was looking for a bit more intensity. I also consider myself much too tough and sassy for regular aerobics classes- so I decided to try it. I was sold after my first class…which I believe was cleaning a 25 lb sandbag. I remember being the last one to finish the met con finisher and deciding this was absolutely for me. Its hard to believe that at some point 25 lbs was so unwieldy for me…I’ve been a complete cult member since.

3. What’s one specific personal record you’d like to reach through CrossFit and when do you want to reach it by?

Continue working up to multiple pull-ups and full pushups (10 ideally) with not so much struggle. I would also like to hit body weight squats…not so far off. I would like to do these by the end of the year….but I know I need to be patient with myself.

Basically my real goal is to be a complete badass…

4. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Seriously so many…the feeling of finishing something that I never thought I could do (or for that matter -would *want* to do i.e.- 150 thrusters); learning new movements ; lifting more weight than I ever could have imagined (up until crossfit, I only ever thought to lift 8 lb dumbbells, now I am lifting 75 pounds of sand?!) the tremendous ups of feeling like a superhero who can do anything; the crazy amount of confidence I have gained in 8 months…translates to all aspects of my life; developing a healthier relationship with food and body image; the sense of community and pride watching others progress and get stronger.

**Push pressing 75 lbs and my first pullup were both amazing. Doing this as a vegetarian is an even bigger accomplishment for me.

I might be the only boss who announces during a staff meeting that they did a pullup.

5. Favorite place to get a meal in Philly?

Fancy- Horizons- their seitan is *amazing*, Mi Lah, Honeys for breakfast….mmmm breakfast!

Not fancy- Royal Tavern- tempeh BLT, POPE, Green Rock; Memphis Tap Room; Red Hook; Grocery; gourmet to go
