July’s Member of the Month!
Once a month, our community votes to recognize a single member who embodies the spirit of CrossFit Center City. He/she is someone who has a good attitude, even on the toughest days, is always there to lend support to fellow athletes, and generally goes the extra mile to help build our community to become even more awesome. When it’s time to vote, we send a reminder email out to the entire crew, but if you ever see another member do something really cool for you or the gym in general, feel free to shoot us an email at email@example.com to tell us what happened!
Our Member of the Month is always awarded a FREE month of membership to CFCC.
Most, if not all, of you know July’s Member of the Month. She is an athlete that attends each class with an incredibly contagious energy and positive vibes. If there is one thing that concerns her more than her own achievements in strength, it is the advancements of her fellow athletes. She is stead-fastidly helping to create the social environment of this gym that everyone falls in love with. We are incredibly lucky to have had this athlete walk through our doors and help us become exactly the kind of gym that we want to be.
July’s Member of the Month is…Kimmy Gaber
Here’s what some of you had to say about our very own social butterfly:
“She’s an absolute cheerleader for everyone, supportive to a fault if there was such a thing, made prom a hit, trains hard and doesn’t cut herself an inch of slack, has more fun in life than a lot of people I’ve met and has the most perfect streak of playfulness running through her that you can’t help but smile around her.”
“I nominate Kimmy Gaber because she is so positive and encouraging. she’ll cheer everyone else on even in the middle of giving her best effort for herself during workouts. she is awesome. “
“Because she’s awesome. And a hard worker… And awesome. And a good person… And pretty awesome.”
“For being awesome at organizing all things fun for the amazing people at CFCC so that we can socialize outside of the gym (or inside/redecorated at prom)!”
Getting to know Kimmy
What do you when you’re not here? Your profession?
When I’m not here I can most likely be found hanging out with other people who like fun. My day job is awesome – I work for Comcast helping develop finance geniuses into finance genius leaders.
How did you find out about CrossFit?
You mean before or after I watched the games while eating Chinese food on my couch (no really). Last summer, my best friend from home, Erica, started going to Crossfit FBO in beautiful Erie, PA (also my CF home for a month) and raved about the all-around awesomeness and lifestyle benefits that Crossfit provides. Then, this past fall my best friend from Penn State, Leah, started at Crossfit Jersey City (where I got my first banded pull-up) and promised me that I could do it, that I wouldn’t look stupid, and that I should just trust her and try. I started in December of 2012 and almost don’t remember life before CFCC.
What makes you come in and train on days when you don’t want to?
If I wanted to work out at home by myself, I would. And I did. And didn’t. And then did again. Once in a while. Pathetically. And so boringly. And got almost nowhere, except sleepy feet on the elliptical. I come for the people – at first it was people I thought I wanted to look like. But then it quickly morphed into the people that I want to be like. To me, the staff/coaches are the backbone and the heart of CFCC – I love them all equally for completely different reasons – and aren’t just amazing role models as athletes but as really good people – and I want to make them proud. The community aspect is the best thing about CFCC – I started in the 4:30 and then the 5:30 (hey evening peeps!), and am (hopefully) now considered a regular at the 6am with the most steadfast athletes I’ve ever seen in my life – and we have a damn good time when we #doitatdawn. And as I’ve gotten more involved in the CFCC community aspect, the people I meet and the friends I’ve made just keep getting more and more absurdly awesome.
What’s your favorite movement and/or metcon?
Anything that involves lifting/moving heavy things – including all things strongman. I was also really happy – and I’m pretty sure I professed my love to Danny while upside down – when he helped me get my first handstand…so fun now.
What’s one thing you would like to accomplish within CF in the next year?
So a year from now…July 2014…I want to be flipping the BMF tire by myself and doing bodyweight pull-ups. And not come in last at running all.the.time.
Name something about yourself that’s a little known fact.
A few people know this, but I’m coming up to a pretty big life milestone that I’ll be hoping to share more about later.
But for now, a fun fact…I am going to marry my friends in November. I got ordained online by the church of the universe or something and will try really hard not to start the ceremony with, “Mawwiage. Mawwiage is what bwings us togethew today.” But they keep half-joking they’re going to make me wear a gold bedazzled robe for the ceremony, so I just might.
What the Coaches had to say
Kimmy Gaber is really fun! I’m happy for the social aspect that she has brought to the gym.
Kimmy is enthusiastic, encouraging, and always brightening our day at 6am!
Who’s Kimmy? PSYCH!!!!! Everyone knows Kimmy! She’s positive, colorful, swears like a sailor, and a totally wonderful addition to the CFCC community. And obvs, her shirts.
Kimmy has been a positive force since she first walked into CFCC, and hasn’t let up a bit. She came through as a wonderful party planner for the CFCC Prom and as an athlete she is always trying to push herself and others to do their best. Congrats!
Kimmy brings a great energy to every class she comes to, always keeping a positive attitude and encouraging those around her to excel.
I still remember the moment Kimmy introduced herself to me. It was after my first nutrition seminar, it was hot as hell in the back of CFCC, and she told me something along the lines of “I’ve been eating Paleo for a few months, I’ve lost a bazillion pounds, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.” The rest is history. She’s a force to be reckoned with at CFCC – a social butterfly with seemingly boundless energy (and capacity for chugging beer that I can only bow to). She volunteered to chair CFCC’s social efforts and she thrives on going the extra mile to get her favorite people in the same place to do fun things. She’s often the first one to reach out to new members to bring them into the fold and make them feel like part of the CFCC family. She’s committed to training hard and eating well and her incredible results over the past year speak volumes about her dedication to her healthy lifestyle. Kimmy, you’ve become such an integral part of our community, and I’m so happy you’re here. Congratulations!
Kimmy Gaber came to CFCC curious, injured, and completely unaware of her own (barbell-wise) strength. She has, in her short time here, proven herself to be a critical part of the joy of being in this gym. Regardless of the time of day, she is positive (that smile), provocative (tee-shirts), and a powerful force of good old fashioned fun and hard work at CFCC. I am grateful for her patience with herself as an athlete, and her empathy as a friend. I am so proud to have Kimmy here as a part of our CFCC family and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
