Congratulations, Bern Kooi!

Once a month, our community votes to recognize a single member who embodies the spirit of CrossFit Center City. He/she is someone who has a good attitude, even on the toughest days, is always there to lend support to fellow athletes, and generally goes the extra mile to help build our community to become even more awesome. BAAAHHHHHH BERN!!! CONGRATULATIONS WOMAN!! I don’t even know where to start or what to say. Bern is a champion! She was my first partner since coming back to CFCC and I couldn’t have asked for a better one!! She reintroduced me to the CFCC spirit and community with her amazing support, energy, and her comedic wit. Bern is an awesome friend both in and out of the gym, so here is to you bud! Keep on rocking on!!!

You never, ever know what to expect with Bern in class, except that she will always be supportive, funny and out-perform herself day in and day out. The gainz that she has been exhibiting are as amazing as her dance moves. Bern is most definitely one of the most positively, hilariously awesome additions to CFCC and I am super lucky to be able to call her a friend.

She is one of the most carefree people that I know! She comes each and every day to the gym with a smile on her face and making some sort of crazy remark that catches everyone off guard with laughter. Furthermore she has no shame in being who she is and true to herself whether that is dancing on the box during a work out or tumbling into a somersault off the GHD during the pull up project. She works so hard and always finishes no matter what which is super humbling and admirable! She is a one of kind that always brightens up my day. Not only is she a fighter in the work out and a one of a kind person, but she has a super interesting life story so I would recommend asking her to tell you a story! Lastly, I mean it when I say she is a person that would do absolutely anything in the world for you no matter how far out of her way it took her.

Bern Kooi, Regina Phalange, Pepper Monaco — the woman has more aliases than work out t-shirts. One of the many things that is so great about Bern/Regina/Pepper is how unabashedly herself she is. Self-aware in her abilities, Bern has never been outwardly intimated by nor shied away from any task at hand inside of the gym. She will show up with a smile, tell a few ‘dad’ jokes, drop a pun and keep it moving. Bern will dance, sing, pull her shorts up too high and be the first person to encourage and hi-five everyone around her. I admire Bern’s grit and determination and I’m so happy she’s a part of my 5:30 family. I’m also thrilled that she brought her husband Ryan to CFCC as he is the perfect compliment to her and great to have around — especially with their matching water bottles. Congratulations, Bern! I have been voting for you for months now and it’s about goddamn time you won this honor. Thank you for being an amazing person and supportive friend in and outside of the gym.

B is a ball of positive energy and always gives her all in every workout. More than that, she is supportive of each and every member of CFCC, and she will gladly cheer on and encourage people to help them find the strength to complete the workout. B is the one who caused me to take my first steps to join CFCC because of the positivity with which she spoke of this place; a positivity she carries with her through each and every workout. For me, without B there would be no CFCC (and a lot of other things, LOL).

Bern’s enthusiasm never ceases to amaze me. Watching her transition from a trepidatious beginner with a good attitude to a determined athlete with a bad ass one has been a pleasure for both the coaches and the members that have been lucky enough to train with her. She’s one of my favorite people to say hello to in the hallway because sometimes she says she misses me and that makes me feel special because I miss her too and so we must be connected in our hearts.

Bern is amazing. First of all, she’s tall and us tall people have to stick together lest we one of us gets capped at the knees. Second, she never backs down from a challenge is always cheering everyone else on. After watching her crush the 12-days of Christmas workout, I gave all my presents back because nothing was going to top that. Go get it Bern!

One of my fondest memories of Bern was when she volunteered to seek out, pick up, and hand deliver a fog machine for our week one open workout in 2015. That is just who Bern is: generous, enthusiastic, a team player, supportive of others, and unafraid to take on challenges. Her energy and playfulness is contagious. Bern’s consistency has led to tremendous progress inside the gym and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her down the road. Congratulations!

“6 Things That I LOVE About Bern”

1. Once upon a time when we moved a bunch of crap for a Strongman competition Bern was a volunteer and basically juggled a set of stones that I couldn’t push down a ramp. I was a) impressed, b) enraptured, c) a little humiliated in a good way.

2. Bern likes Korean food. Do I need to say anymore? #foodismylovelanguage

3. Every day that she is here, Bern has her “try hard” pants on. She gives 110% – whether that means scaling to do something right, trying extra hard to hit a standard, or being brave enough to try something pretty scary. She’s here. She’s invested. She’s positive. I love that!

4. This woman has to be in the running for best t-shirts in the gym. Every thing she wears makes me want to take a picture of her just being. The other nominees are (in no particular order) Kelly Mantegna, Shana McCarron, and Kimmy Gaber.

5. Bern can tell jokes. I can’t tell jokes. Like – at all. Just ask Morgan.

6. Bern hugs my husband on the regular – and I think it’s fantastic. Is that weird? I don’t care. She is a force to be reckoned with, a bear of an athlete – but also, so incredibly friendly.

She’s the best. She’s a rare gem. She completely deserves to be MOTM.

Bern! Tell us about yourself!

1. What do you do when you’re not at the gym? Your profession?

I work as a freelance ninja and I love it! In fact, in December 2015 I was awarded my grappling hook and promoted to Root Anbu. Unfortunately, due to the secrecy surrounding ninja work, neither my targets nor my employers know my identity, so I have yet to receive a paycheck for ninjaing. I have been forced to take a day job, so to pay the bills, I work as a junior project manager in clinical research.

2. How did you find out about CF?

I had lost my motivation for the boring exercise I had been doing and wanted to find something that I had never done before and that would motivate me. I thought that I should look into group training so that I could build off of the motivation of the other members. However, I wanted something more challenging than regular aerobic classes. Through internet searches I found CF and eventually CFCC.

3. What makes you come in and train on days that you don’t want to?

CFCC has become the place where my friends are. If I am having a bad day it makes me feel better just to be around friendly faces. And I feel double better if I am around friends and exercising. Basically, I remind myself that the other CFCC members will be there and that makes me want to go to class.

4. What’s your favorite movement and/or metcon?

I really like the strength portion and my favorite lifts are deadlifts and split jerks. And I really like getting to use my space age jump rope, too.

5. What’s one thing you would like to accomplish within CF in the next year?

I have two goals for myself. First, I would like to be able to do double unders, which is why I bought the space age jump rope. Second, I always attend the evening classes, usually 5:30. I would like to attend some of the morning classes so that I can get to know the morning regulars.
6. Name something about you that’s a little-known fact.

We had farm animals when I was a kid and every spring we would get peeps. One of my earliest memories is when I took a spring peep and tried to be its mother hen so I squatted down and sat on it. I accidentally killed the poor thing and I brought it to my mother and showed her. I remember my mom scolding me, saying, “It’s dead and you killed it!” I was so traumatized that to this day I am unable to do squats.
