Believe it or not, Marina – who has only been to CrossFit a few times – is in a great set-up for a clean here… but she didn’t mean to be!  She’s dead-lifting for “Dianne” here and just forgot to tuck her chin.

Thinking about your set-up right before you go is one of the easiest ways to immediately improve your lifts.  Everything begins there and you have a LOT more time to think about it then than when you’re in the middle of your lift.

The reason we recommend raising the gaze to a point ahead of the lifter when Olympic Lifting is because this allows for balance during a lift as dynamic as the clean. One exceptionally good thing in this picture regardless of whether she is setting up for the dead-lift or the clean is Marina’s spine!  Without a good arch in the back you really can’t fully involve your hips in the lift!  So – chest up!
